What Is a Science GPA?

A science GPA (often called BCPM GPA) is a GPA calculated using science-heavy coursework such as biology, chemistry, physics, and math. It’s commonly used to evaluate performance in technical prerequisite classes.

How Science GPA Is Calculated

Science GPA follows the same structure as a standard GPA:

  1. Convert each letter grade into grade points (for example, A = 4.0)
  2. Multiply grade points by course credits to get quality points
  3. Add all quality points
  4. Divide by total science credits

Science GPA = Total quality points ÷ Total credits

Example

  • 3 credits, A (4.0) → 12.0 quality points
  • 4 credits, B (3.0) → 12.0 quality points

Total points = 24.0
Total credits = 7

Science GPA = 24.0 ÷ 7 = 3.43

Tips for Better Accuracy

  • Use the grading scale your school uses
  • Include only the courses you consider “science” for your purpose
  • Double-check credit hours from your transcript
