Area Calculator

What Is Area?

Area measures how much space a two-dimensional shape covers. It is the size of a flat surface, such as a floor, a wall, a sheet of paper, or a section of land.

Area is measured in square units, such as:

  • square inches (in²)
  • square feet (ft²)
  • square meters (m²)

How to Find Area

To find the area of a shape:

  1. Identify the shape (rectangle, triangle, circle, etc.)
  2. Use the correct area formula
  3. Enter measurements using the same unit
  4. Calculate the result in square units

Area Formulas for Common Shapes

Rectangle

A = l × w

Triangle

A = (b × h) ÷ 2

Circle

A = πr²

Parallelogram

A = b × h

Trapezoid

A = ((a + b) ÷ 2) × h

Example: Area of a Triangle

Base = 12
Height = 5

A = (12 × 5) ÷ 2
A = 30 square units

Why Area Matters

Area calculations are used for:

  • Flooring, carpet, and tile estimates
  • Painting walls and surfaces
  • Landscaping and land measurement
  • Construction planning
  • Geometry and schoolwork

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between area and perimeter?

Area measures the space inside the shape (square units). Perimeter measures the distance around it (linear units).

Do units matter?

Yes. If your measurements are in feet, your area will be in square feet.

Can area be calculated for irregular shapes?

Many irregular shapes can be broken into smaller standard shapes and added together.
