What Is a Stone or Gravel Calculator?

A stone calculator estimates how much gravel, crushed rock, sand, or soil you need for a landscaping or construction project. It calculates the required volume based on the area size and depth.

This helps prevent ordering too little or too much material.

How to Calculate Gravel or Stone Needed

The basic steps are:

  1. Measure the length and width of the area
  2. Decide the depth of material needed
  3. Convert depth to feet (inches ÷ 12)
  4. Calculate volume

Volume (cubic feet) = Length × Width × Depth

Then convert to cubic yards:

Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27

Converting Volume to Tons

Most suppliers sell gravel and stone by the ton. To estimate weight:

Tons = Cubic yards × material density

Typical densities:

  • Gravel: ~1.4 tons per cubic yard
  • Crushed stone: ~1.3 tons per cubic yard
  • Sand: ~1.5 tons per cubic yard
  • Topsoil: ~1.0 ton per cubic yard

Example

Area: 20 ft × 10 ft
Depth: 4 inches

Depth in feet = 4 ÷ 12 = 0.33

Volume = 20 × 10 × 0.33 = 66 cubic feet
Cubic yards = 66 ÷ 27 ≈ 2.44
Gravel needed ≈ 3.4 tons

Common Uses

Stone and gravel calculators are used for:

  • Driveways
  • Walkways and patios
  • Landscaping beds
  • Drainage systems
  • Foundations and base layers

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I order extra material?

Yes. It’s recommended to order 5–10% extra to account for compaction and waste.

What depth should gravel be?

Typical depths:

  • Walkways: 2–3 inches
  • Driveways: 4–6 inches
  • Base layers: 6–8 inches

Is gravel sold by cubic yard or ton?

Most suppliers sell by the ton, but some sell by cubic yard. This calculator provides both.
